An excellent cake, called “birthday cake,” from L.A. Burkdicks. Perfect chocolate frosting. The frosting reminds me of the frosting on a Dobos Torte, my favorite cake, which my mother makes from a recipe from her great aunt who came from Austria. (Cafe Paradiso in Harvard Square actually sells Dobos Torte, which looks like a true Dobos Torte, but doesn’t taste like it–the frosting isn’t right at all.) I just found this history of the Dobos Torte. |

New! I just found this recipe on the L.A. Burdicks site that shows the birthday cake, but calls it Sacher Torte. So it probably is a close cousin to the Dobos Torte.
